Miah's Story

Miah started Friends School Baltimore in the fall of 2020 in third grade, and despite jumping between virtual and in-person classes, Ramiah beams when she talks about her first year--sleepovers, recess, even the lunches (although she’s still not sold on getting fruit for Halloween). Now in fourth grade, Miah has started two clubs of her own, is running for class president, and just switched from the saxophone to the trumpet.

“She looks at things differently now. A whole new future has opened up for her,” says Kiesha, who, in addition to working as a nursing assistant at Johns Hopkins Hospital, is also this year’s class parent. “Her interests are limitless right now. Every time I turn around, she has a different idea of something she wants to do. Some of this probably wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t had this opportunity.”
“I’m happy that other kids will get to do the same thing as I did,” says Miah. “It’s not going to be at all like it was at their old school. The lunches are different, the class sizes. ... You’ll have a therapist there to talk to if you get angry or sad, or sometimes your teachers can talk to you.” Even the playground “is not just a playground,” Miah says. “It’s a basketball court, logs, soccer field, and a blacktop where you can play kickball.”

And her favorite subject? “Algebra,” Miah says without hesitation. For Kiesha, this is the biggest tell. “Math was not something she really liked, it wasn’t her strong suit,” she says. “But her teacher said she’s acing her tests and doing amazing in math.”
